Chapter 17

Lindsey

“I can't believe I'm doing this,” I mutter under my breath as I carry my duffle bag into the tent Scott just set up.

“Are you already grumbling?” Scott chuckles.

“You know there are bugs and snakes out here, right?”

“There’s no more bugs here than you have in your backyard.” Scott follows me into the tent.

“Yeah, but I know those bugs. They’re mine.” I fold my arms over my chest and glare at him. “They know they’re supposed to stay outside and they respect that rule.”

“Oh, I didn’t think of that.” He strokes the scruff on his chin and his eyes sparkle with amusement. “Do you think we should hold a press conference with them? We could let them know this is how things work for this weekend. Come Sunday night, they can go back to doing whatever they want to do.”

“Don’t make fun of me!”

“I'm not, baby. But they’re bugs! They’re everywhere and they don’t care how you feel about them. C’mon, I thought we were doing this for Jacks.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and leans down to kiss me.

Scott’s lips barely brush against mine when the zipper of our tent starts moving and Jacks starts talking a mile a second.

“Mom, do you know where my pillow is? I can't find it.”

I step out of Scott’s arms a split second before Jackson can see us and giggle at Scott’s frustration. I'm right there with him, but I love my son to death.

“I think you left it in the backseat… are you sure you want to sleep in your own tent?” I glance at Scott, knowing he wants some alone time with me, but this is my baby. I'm not sure I can handle him sleeping in his own tent in the middle of the woods.

“Yes! Plus, I'm not going to be alone. Mark will be here any minute. It would be weird for him to sleep in a tent with my mom.” Jacks rolls his eyes like I'm crazy.

“Yeah, but you’re my little boy.” I pout.

“I know, Ma. And I’ll still be your little boy, just sleeping in a different tent.” Jackson wraps his arms around my waist, giving me a tight hug. I know I’ll never get tired of these hugs. One day I'm going to crave them and he won't be around to give them to me.

Gravel crunches underneath tires and Jacks releases me so he can run out to meet Mark.

“I love you! I need to go say hi to Mark though!” He bolts out of the tent and I let out a loud sigh.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?”

“I always thought I’d have a house full of kids. I wanted at least four, but Matt decided he was done with one. Isn't that ironic? Him and Jackie had a baby already and I'm fairly certain she’s pregnant again. Why didn’t he want more kids with me, but he does with her?” I squeeze my eyes shut as I wrap my arms around my own waist and let my insecurities show.
